Swimming with your baby this summer

The summer is rolling in, bringing with it sunshine and warm weather. The Covid-19 crisis probably means we won’t be jetting off on holiday but we have some easy tips to remember when you plan your next swimming trip or if you want to take a dip in the paddling pool at home. It might seem a little daunting at first, but with the right preparation swimming in the pool or a paddling pool can be a wonderful and memorable experience for you and your baby! With our tips, you can have the perfect swimming experience.

1.      Swim nappies are essential!

This might seem like a really obvious point, but normal nappies aren’t suitable for use in the pool They’ll get waterlogged very quickly, leaving your baby uncomfortable. Instead, you should use swim nappies that are specially designed for use in the water. At iD, we believe that nappies should be comfortable and easy to use, so you and your baby can enjoy life to the full. Our swim nappies are easy to take off (you just rip them at the sides), offer waterproof protection and are totally leak-proof. Because they are suitable for young ones up to 12kg, even your toddler can enjoy a safe, leak-free swim. The nappies are available in a pack of 13, so plenty for swimming fun for you and your baby!

2.      Make sure you’re prepared

Before getting into the pool, make sure you have everything you need for you and your children; this could include:

  • Snacks (especially if you have older children or your baby is weaning)
  • A warm bottle, if you bottle feed
  • Swimming costumes for you and your children
  • Towels for you and your baby (preferably a soft towel with a hood for the little one)
  • Your nappy bag
  • Bath toys, which can help your baby feel more at ease and familiar in the water
  • A warm hat to put on your baby to keep them warm when you’re done in the pool
  • Sun cream and a sun hat for your baby, if you’re going to be outside in the sun.

It may also be easier for you to put your swimming costume on under your clothes in the morning, to speed up changing time once you’re ready to swim.

In terms of when you can go swimming with your baby, it’s best to wait at least six weeks after the birth and check with your GP that your body has had enough time to recover and heal. However, you don’t need to wait until your baby has had their full course of vaccines to take them.[1]

3.      Stay calm

It can take a little while for a baby to get used to being in the water. Don’t be surprised if your first session only lasts for ten minutes. Just stay calm, maintain eye contact with your little one and try to enjoy it! You could even consider finding a baby swim class in the future.

At iD, our goal is to help you live life in full view. Our Swimmies are perfect for taking your little one for a swim, as they are comfortable, waterproof and leakproof. Check out our full range for nappies for all occasions.
